Same reasoning for me. Those stocks are cyclical and growth can be evasive, but they do tend to be solid companies that pay high dividends. I don't think it's a crazy idea to hold gold, but you have to cherry pick the holding period to return anything close to the stock market. The same would apply to oil if the dividend wasn't there.
