Camping again ... finally!

Now that I've retired and the kids are gone, I've finally had the chance to go camping again. My thoughts for the last 20-some years has been to have a week away camping the old-fashioned way in the mountains in the same campgrounds when I was growing up. This time, we stayed at Fish Creek Ponds in the middle of the Adirondack mountains of NYS between Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake.

After spending the winter replacing the tent, screenhouse and Coleman camp stove due to age and mice, I finally made my reservations in late-May. The first night there, we found the lantern also had been aged-out by a worn out plunger in the pressure pump. As I'm a Luddite about the camping gear we use, I had to have the old-fashioned gear I used when I was younger and wanted a white gas lantern to replace it. I had already caved in to the idea of a propane stove since the Coleman gas stoves were non-existent except for some badly beat up used stoves. We lived without one for 2 days until we visited a sporting goods store in the village of Saranac Lake. As we did some browsing, lo-and-behold I found a Coleman white gas lantern sitting on the back of a shelf in their camping gear section. I don't know how long it's been sitting there since Coleman phased those out many years ago but I had to have it. Itch scratched.

The week was glorious. As anyone who's spent any time in the Adirondacks knows, you're bound to get rain if you're there for any length of time. We only had rain for a few hours during one night and the days were sunny and warm. Quite a rare occurrence. Our site was on the water with a nice view of the lake and mountains beyond. A week of leisure sitting by the fire, reading (real books and newspapers), watching the boaters, napping, and cooking good meals on our new stove & the camp fire. We spent a day sightseeing in the nearby villages but the rest of the time was just decompression. I was surprised that I could still sleep on the ground and get in an out of our tent at my age.

The highlight of the trip was our canoe adventure. We rented a canoe for a day and paddled around for hours. Stopped at an island for a picnic lunch on a large boulder. As we were returning, we saw a couple loons in the distance so we paddled towards them. Turns out, it was a pair with a chick between them. They dove under the water as we approached so we just stopped and floated wondering where they would pop up. To our surprise, they popped up about about 10 feet from our canoe but quickly swam away. I haven't seen loons near here for over 50 years. It was a magical experience.

Here's a couple photos attached.

I haven't been following the Red Sox much this year. I will explain.

It all started in 2018, our World Series year with such an amazing team. But Chris Sale was toast by the end of the season, yet inexplicably despite all the evidence suggesting his arm was about to fall off, they gave him a huge contract extension. This was to lay the groundwork for all the problems to come.

Next, the Sox let Mookie Betts go because they couldn't afford him. That was awful. Still, they said that by doing this, they'd be able to hold onto other stars like Xander Bogaerts.

Then came the foolhardy acquisition of Trevor Story, which prevented us from retaining other players, especially Bogaerts.

So now I look at the Red Sox, and everyone is gone. Mookie Betts. Xander Bogaerts. Kyle Schwarber. Nathan Eovalidi. Eduardo Rodriguez. JD Martinez. All playing well on other teams.

Looking at the current Red Sox payroll:
Chris Sale - $27.5 million - out indefinitely
Trevor Story - $20 million - out indefinitely
Rafael Devers - $17.5 million - slumping

It's 2023! Here's how the year shapes up for me:

-March-

With my annual bonus, I have 4 options.
Option 1 is to replace my air conditioning condensers (I have 2) because freon has been illegal since 2020; I can't get them serviced anymore. They could stop working at any time. I've made it this far though.
Option 2 is to fund my ROTH IRA.
Option 3 is to fund my taxable account.
Option 4 is to keep the funds in savings.

-April-

I get my raise. Hopefully it will be enough to allow me to avoid needing dividends in my budget, or at least reduce the need from say $400 to $100.

-May-

My ex-wife graduates law school and could theoretically start working. Do people hire 47 year old lawyers? We will find out! If and when she does, we can recalibrate child support, and hopefully the $485 I pay per week goes down to something I can more easily manage, like say $300. Then the additional funds, plus my existing dividends, can hopefully allow me to invest $1200+ per month, and we can get this party restarted

well, after a many years long vacation due to past health issues with my parents and myself i got away from golf and fishing--it just happened. i've been slowly getting back into fishing, i always enjoyed fishing a lot more then golfing anyways. in my previous life, fishing was trout, pond/lakes and bay fishing--in that order--i always wanted to try shore fishing but never had the gear or knew anyone who did it. fishing from a boat was always my favorite no matter what, wether on a river, bay or lake/pond--just relaxing imho.

i'm really upset with myself now but i gave all my old fishing gear to a relative of mine--he helped me out wouldn't take cash and finally i was like oh man come on--and on a whim i said take my fishing gear it's just sitting there rotting away--he took it--and quite honestly--it couldn't have gone to a better person, well deserved. but man!! do i miss that equipment! it was a mix of a old early 1970's france made mitchell, diawa, a junkie penn (must have been a defect), and my favorites two shimano's that i used the most.

my shimano's were japan made--loved these reels, great for trout and pond fishing--a little too small for larger lakes--okay for crappy but the occasional larger fish was a little too much, then that's when i always would fall back on my all-rounder mitchell--at one time i used the mitchell for everything, stream, pond, lake and bay lol...just would change out the line and rod--this was the most sentimental due to the fact my uncle gave me the reel after he upgraded--favorite for personal reasons.

i'll probably go back to the shimano's, used a lot of diawa's but once i got those two shimano's i was hooked (no pun intended lol) i would expect the same experience

the one thing i'm taken back by is the PRICES HOLY SHIT LOL

i'll have to start off with an all-rounder type reel again...maybe...i'll see

a trout stream and a quarry are within walking distance from my house so that's what i'll target the most--like in the past it'll grow

i'm definitely hoping getting to 30 years, you never know these days, the company can get rid of you or well...i'm 51 now and anything can happen--so i'll do my best to try to do the right thing in many ways lol then hope for the best

i really don't want to retire and do the part time gig unless i have too--maybe work at a winery--i might enjoy that one
my sister does real estate, i told her hey i'll be your grunt

but the point is that i'm at that time and age i need to really prepare for the next phase the "pre-retirement" plan

i'm hoping everything goes smoothly and have everything in place in case i retire in 5 years and 10 years respectively
the closer i get to 59/60 would be the best
or as we use to say as a joke it would be gooder lol

Hi all,

Grab some popcorn and enjoy the story.

On Friday I went down to Westchester County New York for a Bar Mitzvah, and I left on Saturday evening. On my way back, I lost Automatic Transmission. I couldn't get above 40 miles per hour, and the AT light went on. I pulled over to the side of the highway, turned the car off, turned it back on, and it started smoking and heated up. I turned it back off right away.

I called AAA but they couldn't service that road. They gave me the number of a towing company. That towing company gave me another towing company. That towing company said to call the cops, so I did. The police arrived, then called the previous towing company. I was towed to White Plains. In White Plains I called AAA back, and we came up with the plan that I get towed to the Bronx, since there is a Pep Boys open on Sunday who might be able to fix my car, and a motel right nearby it for me to stay the night.

I arrived at the motel and instantly I realized what I was in for. The blue light shining over the bed, the copious amount of mirrors, the porn playing on the tv - it was a bordello. Sure enough, around midnight, the rooms all around me become "active" with noises. What a night.

Sunday arrived, and Pep Boys as it turns out, do not handle transmission issues. I apparently need Aamco for that. I get towed back to White Plains, drop my car key off in the Aamco slot, and stay at a friend's place.

Aamco does not get to my car on Monday. Yesterday rolls around, and it looks like they are going to need at least a week to fix my car. My friends take me to the Amtrak station in Stamford. Now, this is the only good part of the experience, as it costs me only $33 to travel from Stamford to the Rte 128 station in Westwood Mass where my parents pick me up.

So I'm home now, carless, and will have to travel back in a week or so to get my car, and I will have to sink another $3k or so into it before this adventure comes to a close.

Hi all,

I will probably need a car in about 3 years. I see the prices for cars have gone way, way up since I last bought one. If I want to go new, I'm probably looking at $35k or so. I see a few options for budgeting for something like this:

1. Start building up a cash position now and don't invest in the market again until I have set aside the amount needed.
2. Build up reliable funds like VOO or SCHD and cash them out when the time comes.
3. When the time comes, cash out stocks/etfs that have made large gains, since presumably they are reading for trimming anyway.
4. When the time comes, get rid of underperformers.

How do you do it?

Edit: can a mod move this to "other topics"?
