How would you start a portfolio in today's environment

If I was just starting a portfolio in today's environment, it would be a company sponsored retirement plan, if my company did not offer one, I would open a Roth through Vanguard and start off with a Total Retiremt Fund. Then I would read, read and read some more and ask a lot of questions.

And that my friend is what makes this a great community. You can get some good ideas from SA but, you need to weed out some of the authors and "noise".
Good advice here so far and I try to understand what is being said here.
