I got no bug report from you but from your short description it seems that something is blocking its connection to the internet. Every action that requires an internet connection gave you an error.

Either you were not connected to the internet or you blocked it in your firewall. Unblock it and it will work for your like a charm.

A new version 1.2.0 for speeding things up. An improvement for the updating last price/dividends/dividends history processes so the user earns 2 things
1) The user can continue working while the process is executed in the background
2) The updating is done for multiple stocks in parallel so it's much faster than before

I have tried your stock.div program for about a week now. I really like what that it downloads David Fish's list automatically. I also like the dashboard. I have a couple of problems though that I thought you might address.

1. I entered my purchases three times only to have them disappear within a couple of days.

2. Cannot enter partial shares

3. Cannot vary purchase price

4. Does not like when i try to give my watch list a name. Renames to Custom 1, etc.

Thanks

Thank you for your feedback

1. Notice that Stock.Div stores its data files in the same folder where you run the executable so when running the program, the data files should be there as well. Just for testing: enter a new purchase and go to the folder, do you see purchasehistory.xml? When the purchases vanished, do you run the program from somewhere else/shortcut?

2. I admit that I didn't know partial shares are possible. If I understand you correctly, it simply means that instead of purchasing 2 shares, you purchase 2.45/2.5? I ask so I will add support for that.

3. Not sure I understood. When opening the stock window, you can either enter the share price or the total price and Stock.Div will calculate the other part. You can then re-open the stock's window and change it as you wish, even past purchases. What's missing?

4. I just checked and apparently there is a bug there - I will fix it for 1.2.1 that will be released soon

Thanks for such a quick reply

1. Yes. I saved it to my desktop where it put an icon to have easy access. I just double click it. I think I see what I did wrong. I did not realize that it would create other files on my desktop, as opposed to storing it in the program. I move them to the recycle bin as I don't leave files on my desktop that I do not recognize. I think I fixed it by restoring them.

2. Yes. There are quite a few brokerages where you can purchase partial shares. I happen to own, for example, 49.36 shares of CSCO.

3. Sorry. I should have said commission. Many people buy from multiple brokerages causing different commissions. I also buy baskets of stocks from Motif which causes the $9.95 commission to be broken up unevenly over the basket of stocks.

4. Thanks

1. I recommend you to open a dedicated folder for stock.div and its files. For the next version I will put the files in a dedicated DATA folder so it won't cause too much cluttering. Ofcourse the transition from how it works now will be transparent to the user.

2. Just from curiosity, can you also sell those partial shares? If it doesn't have much effect that I don't see at the moment, I'll add support for that in the next release.

3. The whole commissions part will be redesigned for 1.3.0 so at the moment I try to understand what is the best way to handle it because I see there are almost infinite ways to be charged with commissions. For now I have:
a) X cents per share with a minimum (i.e. 1c with 1$ minimum)
b) fixed commissions (i.e. 7$ fixed)
c) % commissions from the transaction with a minimum (i.e. 0.2%)
d) like A or C + fixed/percent amount (0.2% or 1c per share + 2$ fixed)
e) custom (whatever Smile)

Does it cover most of the commissions you have or did I forget something? Smile
Can you explain Motif commissions? Is there a rule of some kind or it's crazy as it sounds?

1. Got it. So far the dedicated folder is working fine.

2. Yes, I can sell partial shares.

3. That would about cover it. Probably should have a default but be able to edit it inside the stock transaction window. I have not spent any time trying to figure out the cost split in Motif. I just noticed that it was uneven over the Motif (basket of stocks). The usually spread it out over the first 3 of 4 stocks and the rest show no commission.

Thanks for the help.

2. I wonder why someone will purchase partial shares Smile Anyway, support was added to the next release (1.2.1)

3. OK, all these commissions options are a bit more complicated, I already have it planned for the next version (1.3.0)

4. I already fixed that (renaming a watch list)

Thank you for your feedback, if you encounter more problems, do share.
