Mining Stocks
#1
In the early noughties (that word still doesn't sound right to me!), I invested heavily in a number of mining companies dealing in rare metals from around the planet. After one hell of an excellent run I bailed out early 2009 as mining stocks became very volatile.

At the moment I wouldn't even think about getting involved in them again as the main customer, the West, is still struggling for growth, and until that picks up mining stock will consider to stutter.

Another point is that China's dominance in rare metal mining will start to drop, although this will take a good few years, new mines are being opened up elsewhere. So it's all a bit erratic at the moment.

I learned that lesson earlier this year with CLF and am also going through it again now with SCCO. I love SCCO's long term growth prospects, but the volatility in earnings and dividends makes it a bumpy ride. Definitely not a S.W.A.N. type of investment.
