RE: What Did You Buy Today? - ken-do-nim - 06-29-2021

We have a philosophy difference here.  When I sell at a loss, I take a gut check, and that gut check goes as follows, "Stock X I'm down 5% on.  Stock Y, which is similar, I'm up 5% on.  Do I think that, from here on out, Stock X will outperform Stock Y?"  If the answer is no, in this brave new world of zero commissions, I move the funds to Stock Y.

In the case of ORC, KMI, and BTI, the loss on ORC was somewhat sizeable (over $100) and I had zero confidence it would right the ship and even stabilize.  I used to own ORC when it was closer to 10; it's time to quit.  KMI and BTI were tiny losses.

That said, hopefully my gargantuan portfolio churn is coming to an end for 2021.  I don't even want to show you my transactions tab.  Thankfully when we do our taxes it can electronically download from E*Trade so I don't have to type all that stuff in.

Dude I am a charter member of ENPH.  I made a few hundred a month the past year selling short puts while it ran.  I have a few short puts that are WAY in the money after this bloodbath.  I can only roll forward so much before I own $140 shares.   Big Grin  I said here many times I was good with adding a real position starting at $125.  If I am honest I need ENPH to head back to $120ish to be back to even.  I wasn;t aggressive enough when it was truly cheap.  I'll add shares to my growthy port in the meantime.

Yeah yeah. What ever floats your boat  Big Grin lol
I am very good with owning ENPH long-term.  How happy I am in the end very much depends on the entry.  We'll see where the bottom is soon enough.

Well me too. Got in at $108.90  Big Grin

This will be a big winner for years to come.  You have to add at some point, so why not today. I don't worry about making a few $ here and there  Big Grin . I'm in to win it lol

I'd entertain that if you didn't go from enthusiastic to disappointed in a few weeks, wake up in the morning and dump six stocks on a whim, so you can immediately move on to a new yield trap that ran up 50% before you found it.  You'll get by with it while the bull is running at all.  I churn a part of my port and it is usually based on the buy low sell high theory. I won't dump JNJ at a loss because it had a bad six weeks.  I try not to overthink this or allow fear and greed to drive my trades.  Good research minimizes the possibility of that.

I haven't researched it.  Hadn't heard of it until you and Otter were discussing it last week.  I am trying to not add too many more new names.  We'll see how long that lasts.  Smile

What I need is for tech to get hammered for real again, but this market is resilient.

Very small trades this morning.  Added a few shares to DG-ARKF  Sold a few SLV puts.

I would really appreciate it if my fellow posters put their rationales here.  For instance, why sell out of TSM?  TDOC has been steadily rising since mid-May, why leave it?  Of course QCOM is great too.

Mainly due to valuation. I want exposure to chips and comparing the P/E & peg ratio of these 2 companies, QCOM is my pick. I have a very small position in TDOC and I have been looking for a way out. It is finally back to the price when I initiated. Moving $$ from speculative stocks into DG stocks is more aligned with my investment strategy. Of course I dabble and sidetrack every now and then.

RE: What Did You Buy Today? - fenders53 - 06-29-2021

I flipped my QCOM shares to TSM to consolidate and it happened to look intelligent that week. I like TSM years from now with their FAB expansions coming but may not stay straight through the ride. I see TSM as more diverse. I also sold a TSM covered call today so I am not married to them. I'll stay in chips until the shortage is resolved though. Gone for the next down cycle which will come on short notice like always. The next down cycle may be less severe but it will come.

TDOC has nothing that can't be replicated and if it is truly lucrative it will bring serious competition. Nothing magical about it to command the PE. First mover status won't be a MOAT this time.

How funny you did exactly the opposite! They are both good companies.

Hey, I resemble that remark!   Big Grin

Well, whatever steps got my portfolio to where it is, today, at close of business on June 29th, I have to say I like the way it looks.  Hopefully by this time next year, I'll have enough dividends flowing in that my budget is solid and I can focus more on acquiring really good stocks be they DGI or growth.

Yes they are.  There is probably not much difference to a shareholder in the near term anyway.  When a sector I like gets hit that I am not invested enough in, I tend to gather 3-4 stocks while they are down.  I try to do research and figure out where to concentrate.  I can't keep track of four chip stocks as I am not competent in the sector.  I picked a couple and try to understand them enough to have conviction.  The day I switched TSM was down a little more than QCOM.  My TSM dividend was subject to foreign withholding in my IRA.  I don't need that hassle so I will sell covered calls until it goes away at a decent profit.  Wish I had put more in AVGO instead.  I have a position in SOXX and that is what I should have stuck with.  That may be how it ends.

RE: What Did You Buy Today? - EricL - 06-30-2021

Bought some CHK in my trading account. Looks cheap with $3.50 nat gas.

Balanced sheet is solid after emerging from bankruptcy, and pays a 2.5% dividend to boot.

RE: What Did You Buy Today? - rayray - 07-01-2021

yesterday sold..yes sold TSM--the only reason was the divi gets taxed in the IRA and I HATE paying a tax when it doesn't have to be paid--it's been something i've been waiting to do and fenders reminded me about it the other day--THANK YOU lol

locked in a 33.12% gain on TSM and also sold the spun off shares BAMR (i don't want to mess around with k1's again) with the the sales going to yesterday's buys of...

RE: What Did You Buy Today? - ken-do-nim - 07-01-2021

Clearly I have some work to do in my taxable portfolio; almost everything is green at the moment, but because my chips are down (TXN/AVGO/TSM/SOXL), it is down.

Yeah I wasn't paying attention.  Filing documents to get back dividends that wouldn't be otherwise taxed in my IRA doesn't work for me.  I don't love it but I am OK with a few pennies withheld by Canada as they have a lot of stocks I like.  They grabbed a big bite of my TSM DIV.   It will be gone soon enough when it runs through my covered call strike.  I will probably put it in SOXX and AVGO the same day.
