My crazy weekend - ken-do-nim - 03-30-2022

Hi all,

Grab some popcorn and enjoy the story.

On Friday I went down to Westchester County New York for a Bar Mitzvah, and I left on Saturday evening.  On my way back, I lost Automatic Transmission.  I couldn't get above 40 miles per hour, and the AT light went on.  I pulled over to the side of the highway, turned the car off, turned it back on, and it started smoking and heated up.  I turned it back off right away.

I called AAA but they couldn't service that road.  They gave me the number of a towing company.  That towing company gave me another towing company.  That towing company said to call the cops, so I did.  The police arrived, then called the previous towing company.  I was towed to White Plains.  In White Plains I called AAA back, and we came up with the plan that I get towed to the Bronx, since there is a Pep Boys open on Sunday who might be able to fix my car, and a motel right nearby it for me to stay the night.

I arrived at the motel and instantly I realized what I was in for.  The blue light shining over the bed, the copious amount of mirrors, the porn playing on the tv - it was a bordello.  Sure enough, around midnight, the rooms all around me become "active" with noises.  What a night.

Sunday arrived, and Pep Boys as it turns out, do not handle transmission issues.  I apparently need Aamco for that.  I get towed back to White Plains, drop my car key off in the Aamco slot, and stay at a friend's place.

Aamco does not get to my car on Monday.  Yesterday rolls around, and it looks like they are going to need at least a week to fix my car.  My friends take me to the Amtrak station in Stamford.  Now, this is the only good part of the experience, as it costs me only $33 to travel from Stamford to the Rte 128 station in Westwood Mass where my parents pick me up.

So I'm home now, carless, and will have to travel back in a week or so to get my car, and I will have to sink another $3k or so into it before this adventure comes to a close.

Quite an eventful weekend! Cars can be such a pain sometimes, but unfortunately they are still an absolute necessity in most places.

That was complicated! Hope your week gets better.

Ouch. That sucks! Except for getting a good story out of it.

What was the address of that motel again?

(Just kidding!)

I still don't have my car back yet. Sigh.

That car has been needy the past few months.

The past few years.  In hindsight, I should have bought a new car in 2020, but c'est la vie.

From what I have read here, a newish used car sounds like a reasonable plan once the prices cool off.  I wouldn't pay 90% of new price for a three year old car like people are doing now.  That is about the craziest thing I have ever heard other than current real estate prices.

Almost sounds like you blew a cooler line and fluid leaked. Smoking is the indication. Hope they aren't going to sell you a new trans instead of a $150 line.

But you know their ad-Most cars we service don't need a new transmission...(but they get one anyway). LOL

RE: My crazy weekend - fenders53 - 04-08-2022

Well that was comforting. Smile

Well what is the final verdict?

I won't be able to give a final verdict for several years.  Hopefully the car stays repair-free for a good long time now!
