The new port is actually very green after a month but I am only buying extreme dips in whatever sector is getting crushed this week. It's not an amazing feat when you start a port  6 months into a correction but still fun.

No doubt that a correction is a good time to start a project such as this one.
I will look like a rock star for awhile.  I waited a long time for this as I want my kid to have considerable confidence I am not completely clueless when I offer investment advice.  My past experience tells me that while I can't time the bottom of the market, I may be able to grab close enough to the bottom on some quality stocks here and there.  Plenty of cash left to invest so I can save myself if it doesn't get too bad from here.

And with such long-term investments as long as you pick the right companies, which I know you will do, it'll be nicely in the green (not to mention all the dividend income) even if you miss the bottom by 30%. Smile These will have like 30-40 years to compound before they can be withdrawn without penalties?

That's relatively cheap entertainment these days!
Just today I wondering if I should go to the casino. If I do so, I'm fairly confident that I won't make it out of there with a loss of only $4. Big Grin

Once every month or so I meet some friends at a local casino and we spend the afternoon doing parimutuel betting on horse races. Some of those guys take it serious. I do not - I put $2 to show on the longest long shot in every race and tell lies, drink over-priced beer and grab the occasional mediocre hot dog.

You might be surprised how often my betting strategy pays off. I started doing that so I'd have a stake/interest in each race and so I wouldn't be disappointed when I lost. More often than not I come out ahead.

I used to enjoy harness racing that was held live locally but ours went under long ago.  They held offtrack betting there for years but it seems like a casino would be a better venue for that.
