RE: What Did You Buy Today? - hendi_alex - 01-16-2015 I don't day trade much any more, but when the market insists....I'm pretty confident in charter rates for shipping, to gradually firm and become more reliable over the next couple of years. The portfolio holds 2000 unemcumbered shares of TNK that are about +45% on basis not counting dividends. Also have 4000 shares covering $5 calls. Those probably average about +30%. This morning the trigger was pulled on another 2000 shares moving the position pretty strongly overweight to the tune of about 16%. My intention was to hold a few days and either sell or sell calls on a bounce. Right before close I noted that the price had moved from my $5.58 entry to over $6. Decided to make a round trip pulling the trigger at $5.98. Under 4 hour exposure netted $788 or 7%. As they say, better to be lucky than smart when investing. Don't do this often, but every now and again a play just falls into my lap. Also feels good to end the heavy exposure quickly and have the cash back on the sideline. RE: What Did You Buy Today? - EricL - 01-16-2015 I bought EOG, COP, OXY, CVX, XOM, HP, PSX, NOV and KMI this morning. Good timing so far as they were up over 3% today! RE: What Did You Buy Today? - earthtodan - 01-17-2015 PCP opened -13% Friday due to an advance warning on earnings. The oil & gas segment revenues are going to be very weak although the aerospace segment is going strong. I already have a full position, but I added 50% at $191. If it keeps falling I'll probably keep buying, wait a month, and then sell my higher cost basis shares for a tax loss. RE: What Did You Buy Today? - fredr142 - 01-18-2015 On pullbacks in the market I've been adding to SDY. I've also added some COP, but I think anything oil is a quite risky. May pick up more Apple if it continues to drop. RE: What Did You Buy Today? - Dividend Watcher - 01-20-2015 Added a little JNJ around $100 today in my wife's portfolio. Not what I wanted to pay but a "great company at a fair price". Now if only PG would drop. RE: What Did You Buy Today? - hendi_alex - 01-20-2015 I sold 1200 shares of BGCP on Jan 5th for $9.06 after holding the shares for several months, and to harvest a very good double digit gain. I didn't like, and continue to dislike the direction that this hostile bidding war is going. But do like the aggressive nature in which the company is expanding business to occupy its niche. The company will release quarterly info tomorrow. Today I decided to rebuy the shares at $8.17 based upon two things. First the shares are a much better buy IMO at $8.17 as opposed to holding them when the price was $9.06 and falling. Secondly, I'm expecting a pretty good earnings report which could give the shares a short term pop. Also, I was encouraged by the fact that short interest is on 2% and has dropped about 12% since the previous period. I'll watch the action after the release tomorrow and decided what to do in light of that result. These shares are outside of my modest core holding and total exposure is a little over 4% weighting. Shortly after the purchase, BGCP raised their take over bid, and shares sold off a bit more, pretty unlucky timing, but my thesis remains intact. Fairly secure dividend yields just under 6%. Company has more cash than debt. Pay out ratio is shown as high, but I figure that the mountain of cash makes the payout pretty secure, plus the aggressive growth has been fueling rapid earnings increases. Also have been buying a few 'magic formula' value stocks. CCUR is my third buy from the 'magic formula' value list at a modest 800 shares. This is a thinly traded stock. Yield is near 7%. Yahoo indicates a low 24% pay out ratio plus shows the company holding almost twice as much cash as debt. It is a very small market cap tech company. My magic formula holdings are: CCUR ITRN WILN Since entry this month: ITRN (-2.3%) WILN +11.6% RE: What Did You Buy Today? - rapidacid - 01-20-2015 Initiated a seed position in STX RE: What Did You Buy Today? - DividendDragon - 01-20-2015 I'm tempted to initiate a position in JNJ at this point. If it doesn't open up a fair few % I'll take the plundge. I'm currently waiting for a drop in AAPL but it moved up after testing it's resistance :/ Currently on watch list; KO (at around $40) AAPL JNJ <--- Looks decent but not overwhelming WAL What's everyones opinion on these at current valuation? Nothing cheap really :/ RE: What Did You Buy Today? - Roadmap2Retire - 01-20-2015 Same opinion here...nothing cheap really. Except energy names - which I have pretty big positions in. I think its important to have a decent amount of cash on standby especially this year. The increased volatility will definitely make the market swing wildly.
