Investing in MMJ
#1
I'm very tempted to put a very small amount of speculative money into a handful of medical marijuana companies. It seems like a no-brainer boom industry for the next decade, but that of course does not mean picking winners will be easy.

Most of the attention these days seems to be on very small and inexperienced outfits trying to position themselves for the future, like PHOT, TRTC, and CBIS. But I always wonder to myself why wouldn't Altria or Monsanto swoop in and eat everyone's lunch once there is real money in the industry.

Then there is the more solid pharmaceutical approach of GWPH.

Anyway, just musing really. Anyone else been thinking about this?

I played MJNA a few months ago, and it's getting back down to a price where I'd go in again for a short-term play. If it can drop another 5-10%, I'd consider holding for a while with, maybe, a 0.5% weighting.

Well, sort of. I'm hanging on the my PEP shares. They make good munchies, mon! Big Grin And my GIS. Betty Crocker has a good and quick brownie mix. Angel

As far as investing in them, no, just seems too risky for me. Not so much the potential market but the patchwork of regulations, the fickle consumer that can also get it on the corner and the untested concept. Maybe MO/PM/LO/RAI will take a go at it and I'll let them do the work for me.

Lol. Now there is probably a better play.

I don't see the big tobacco companies getting involved in any way until there is a change in law at the federal level. Right now pot is still illegal on the federal level, there is no way LO, MO or RAI will touch it while that continues.

Is there a specific reason you went with that one? For me, I think I'd just be picking a few names, keeping the amounts small, and hoping for the best. Mostly a speculative side bet to keep me entertained while watching the paint dry on my DG portfolio.

@TomK - A little of column A, a little of column B. Wink

@Kerim - That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm thinking that more U.S. states will follow CO, CA, and MA (a few off the top of the head) in at least allowing medicinal use. As of a couple months ago, NH was considering allowing it, too. Also, I like the name.

Heh I would have gone with POT...if it was relevant. :-P
